Career Advice for Mid-level Marketers with Marie Grieve
It’s always a joy to have a guest feature on the podcast again, and Marie Grieve is back with more brilliant advice for marketing professionals. If our first discussion was focused on junior marketers and Marie’s career story, this episode offers actionable advice for mid-level marketers.
Marie has been an expert marketing and growth strategist for 20 years, 11 of which she spent at the helm of Costello Palmer Communications, a marketing consultancy specialising in the construction industry. So we all have a lot to learn from her. Let’s dive in!
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Budget Constraints
One of the primary challenges mid-level marketers face today is budget limitations. As Marie points out, while marketing is essential for generating income, it frequently doesn’t receive the necessary financial support especially in the SME world. Marketers are often asked to do more with less, which can limit their effectiveness.
- Meaningful Investment: It's crucial to allocate funds wisely to ensure that marketing efforts yield a return on investment (ROI).
- Creativity on a Shoestring: Marketers must find innovative ways to stand out in a crowded marketplace, even with limited budgets. Marie stresses that being meaningful, relevant, and current is essential for success.
Bridging the Gap
In my experience, marketers in the B2B space often find themselves distanced from end-users. This disconnect can hinder their ability to understand customer needs and tailor marketing strategies accordingly. It's essential for organisations to facilitate connections between marketing professionals and the target audience - as regularly as possible - but in many cases, these interactions are bi-annual events at best.
- Understanding Audience Behaviour: Given their lack of exposure to the end user, B2B marketing professionals must take it upon themselves to research their audience’s interests and behaviours to inform their campaigns and decisions.
With Threats come Opportunities - Digital Transformation
The digital landscape has opened new avenues for marketing professionals: social media, content marketing, and digital advertising offer more opportunities than ever for marketers to engage with their audiences and learn from and about them.
- Freelancing and Flexibility: The marketing field has evolved, allowing professionals to carve out careers better aligned with their values and aspirations. When I first started working in Marketing back in 2011, freelancing was an inaccessible option for most of us, junior marketers, whereas now, we all have more flexibility and career options than before. The market has changed for the better, at least in this respect.
- Creative Expression: There’s a shift in how marketing roles are defined. Marketers can now embrace titles that reflect their unique contributions. This change allows for greater creativity and innovation in how professionals of various kinds present themselves.
The Role of Technology
AI and automation can allow marketing professionals to do more with limited resources, however Marie cautioned us all
Marie and I have also explored the pluses and minuses of embracing AI, and agreed that, while AI can allow marketing professionals to do more with limited resources, it comes with a carbon footprint that we shouldn’t forget about. The consensus was that AI can complement marketers’ skills and capabilities but should be used responsibly.
As Marie explains: “If you Google-searched “I want to go to Spain” it's like switching the light on in your house in one room. If you put into ChatGPT “what's the best Balearic island I can go to with my family” and you ask it to look up some hotels, it's like switching on every light in the house. And that's just one search. So as marketers, what we have to think of is what is the carbon cost of our marketing campaigns generated through AI and how do we offset that carbon output?”
